Batik Workshops with Robin Paris

I did't run any public workshops in 2007, partly because of house/studio moving plans and also due to time researching sustainability in batik. At the moment (January 2008) I still am not planning to run workshops - for the same reasons. I need to be working comfortably and with certainty in a sustainable manner before I will begin teaching again. Sorry about that, it's just the way I feel about it.

I have run a variety of workshops since 1996, for beginners and improvers, for batik artists, art groups and galleries, in schools, further and higher education, and for environmental and community groups. Information about school and other community workshops can be found on my community art page.

I also give lectures and slide talks about batik, creativity and inspiration, and about batik as an applied art.

In 2006 I completed a post-16 PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) at Truro College in Cornwall (Plymouth University). Much of my research focused on ecological literacy, traditional ecological knowledge and ancient wisdom, and the relationship between arts, ecology, sustainability and education.

If you would like to be kept informed about future workshops, please join my mailing list. Some concessionary places for students are available on most courses - ask for more details.

2006 workshops

Line, Texture and Colour
Trebah Garden, Mawnan Smith, Cornwall, UK
Saturday 13 - Sunday 14 May 2006
The dynamic interplay of line and texture with colour is at the heart of batik. The ability to plan layers of wax and dye for successful implementation of a design is indispensable. Taking inspiration from the gardens, we will practise the planning process including colour mixing before preparing a design to take through to a finished batik on Sunday.
for beginners/intermediate. Maximum 10 participants - places available

£ 80 includes gardens entry. Materials extra.

Printmaking in Batik (wire stamps)
Cowslip Workshops, Launceston, North Cornwall, UK
Tuesday 25 July 2006
Wire stamps are an effective way of repeating designs, shapes or marks for creating texture and patterns or for print runs. In this workshop after experimenting with several different stamps, you will design and make your own wire stamp or stamps for using in a finished batik.
For beginners and intermediate. Maximum 8 participants - places available

£ 45 includes materials.

Batik for Beginners
Cowslip Workshops, Launceston, North Cornwall, UK
Wednesday 26 July 2006
A fun day discovering the essence of batik - the resist process. After an hour or so experimenting with the canting tool and colour overlaying, the rest of the day will be devoted to making a two or three-stage seasonally-inspired batik.
For beginners and those with little experience. Maximum 8 participants.

£ 42 includes materials.
