Newt Courtship
850 x 850 mm (33 x 33 inches)
sold
Sitting one day by St Nonna's Well in Altarnun, whilst thinking about the olden days when 'idiots' were dunked here to be cured, I became aware of a newt wiggling its tail in a most deliberate fashion at another newt. It then rushed at the newt and lay over it at near right angles before dashing off. Suddenly it seemed that loads of newts were doing this - I was witnessing newt courtship and mating. The newts at St Nonna's Well were Palmate Newts (Cornwall's only newt species), but Great Crested Newts are shown here.

A caterpillar happily munches around a leaf. Unfortunately it cannot see its back, where a wasp lays an egg. The wasp larvae will slowly parasitise the caterpillar.

Spider

My garden is a haven for beautifully patterned and coloured spiders. They are fascinating to watch, whether web spinning or just waiting to pounce on a snagged insect. One of my childhood spider memories is of seeing two small pinpricks of light in a crack in a wall - two little jewels that by watching me were spooking me until a spider popped out and dashed off! (Stared out and scared off, no less!)
